Before performing her new songs "Imaginary Boyfriend" and "Insanity" at the Teen Miss USA 2009 Pageant at the Atlantis in the Bahamas, Leah Renee took some time to talk to us about her debut album, Storybook, which will be out this fall.
17: So, tell us about your album.
Leah Renee: It's an album that I wrote and co-wrote with a production team called The Conglomerate. They've worked with Rihanna, Kelly Clarkston and Jennifer Lopez. A lot of the songs on Storybook came from my journal entries.
17: What's the sound like?
LR: The sound is defiantly Pop/R&B. Very young, fresh, fun music.
17: Are there any collaborations on it?
LR: For the most part, the album is just me. I did do one song, which is one of my favorite songs on the album, called "Small Stupid Things" with the "Swedish Justin Timberlake," as I like to call him. He's going to be coming out to the US really soon as well, his name is Thomas Eriksson.
17: How did you get started in music?
LR: Well, I started out acting actually in Canada. When I was five years old, I started doing commercials and stuff and when I was ten, I really got into animation. I have a higher speaking voice, so I did a lot of cartoon voices like the beaver in Franklin.
17: Where do you see yourself going from here? Is there anyone else that you would like to work with?
LR: I would like to continue doing music for a while. I would like to get better and better, and do it on the highest level possible. Singing for big crowds, I would love sell out places like Madison Square Garden. As far as working with people goes, there are so many talented people in the music industry these days that it's hard to really pick. Growing up, one of my favorite bands was Guns n' Roses. Slash was their guitar player, and I love him and I think it would be so cool to do a collaboration with him playing the guitar on something. I really like Justin Timberlake, and basically every collaboration he does turns out really amazing.
17: If you were a pageant contestant, what would your evening gown be?
LR: I think it would either be coral or yellow. There would definitely be a ton of Swarovski crystals involved, because all those dresses look so beautiful when you see them on stage and the light hits them.
17: What would your hair and makeup be like?
LR: I like big hair a lot, big wavy hair. My makeup, well, I would have false eyelashes for sure. I have them everyday of my life. I'm a fan of nice, dewy fresh looking skin. Maybe some sparkles on the cheekbones, pink cheeks and lip-gloss.
17: What beauty products do you like?
LR: I'm a big fan of MAC eyelashes, number 12, those are my favorite or number 7. I'm a big fan of Nars makeup. I think it's called Coco Cabana, they have a glow stick that I like to use on my cheekbones, and of course Orgasm, their blush.
17: You have great hair. What are your tips?
LR: First of all, I can't take credit for my hair. My dad has the most incredible hair ever. It's genetic. I am a big fan of Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths shampoo and conditioner. I use a conditioning treatment once a week. I actually really like one from Lush, called Marilyn and also one called Big they give your hair volume, but lighter.
17: Where do you love to shop?
LR: I love to shop absolutely everywhere. One of my favorite designers is Dsquared, I love they way their stuff looks. I shop all over, I go to secondhand stores and vintage clothing stores are always a lot of fun.
