This is about Glee by the end of last week’s episode, with Kurt’s (Chris Colfer) Afterschool Special–style coming out scene with Mercedes (Amber Riley). As much as I enjoyed the pilot—just as Fox’s evil marketing geniuses hoped, I rewatched it multiple times over the summer since its May sneak peek—but the first couple of episodes of the season had me wondering about the series’s tone and how long the writers could maintain this mix of high camp and sentimental.
Watching tonight’s episode, “Preggers,” I was reminded of creator Ryan Murphy’s first high school–set show, Popular (of which I was one of the dozen or so fans). It was shaky for its first five or six episodes before finding its (genius) footing, and “Preggers” goes a long way toward reassuring me that Glee will, too. Most importantly, we get an expanded view of the McKinley High universe: A new storyline brings cheerleader Quinn (Dianna Agron) and jock Puck (Mark Salling) more closely into the glee club orbit while simultaneously making them both a bit more sympathetic (but not too much so). Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) finally gets a moment in the spotlight, much to Rachel’s (Lea Michele) chagrin. And the show gets a little Friday Night Lights as Kurt accidentally joins the football team. (If you’ve seen the teaser clip Fox released yesterday, you know that Kurt does a bedroom re-creation of the “Single Ladies” video; I’ll just say that Beyonce’s song plays a bigger part in tonight’s episode than you might think.) I still don’t know how long the writers can keep up the hidden non-pregnancy of Mr. Schuster’s (Matthew Morrison) shrill wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig)—I’m with the Trib’s Mo Ryan on that front—and while Jane Lynch is one of the best things about the show as power-mad cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, her character as written is perhaps a bit too inhuman to reside alongside some of the teen characters’ more heartfelt travails. But I’m confident enough that Glee’s writers will strike the right balance soon.
